Of St. Catharines and formerly of Port Colborne passed away peacefully at the Niagara-on-the-Lake Hospital on Thursday, September 2, 2010 at the age of 82 years.

Beloved husband of Ann (nee English), loving father of John (Doreen) Haywood of St. Catharines, father- in-law of Jim Pitul of Niagara Falls, dear grandfather of Michael Pitul, Brittani, Barrett and Brandon Mulder, brother of Charles (Edna) Haywood of Newark, Delaware, brother-in-law of Pat and Bert Johns of Port Colborne. Also survived by several nieces and nephews. Ronald was predeceased by his daughter Jane Pitul, his granddaughter Sara Pitul and his parents Archer and Eleanor Haywood.

Born in Fonthill, he lived in this area all of his life. He worked at INCO for 33 years until his retirement in 1989. He was a member of St. James and St. Brendan Anglican Church, the Macnab Lodge #169 A.F. & A.M. and the INCO Quarter Century Club. Ronald had also volunteered with Scouting for 25 years.

Funeral service will be held at St. John's Anglican Church, 80 Main St., Port Dalhousie on Monday September 6th at 11:00 a.m. with Canon Gordon Kinkley officiating. Private burial will be in Fonthill Cemetery at a later time.

She will also be missed by many nieces and nephews and their children. Predeceased by her brother Rosario Piampiano.

Cherished uncle of Amanda, Brittney, Anthony, Katryna, Ricky, Brent and Chad. Sadly missed by many aunts and uncles.

(July 14, 1948 - August 31, 2010) - It is with great sadness that the family of David Lafontaine announces his passing after a dignified and courageous battle with cancer.

Dave leaves behind his loving and dedicated wife Deborah Lafontaine, his father Roy (the late Gwen) Lafontaine, his sisters Rae Lafontaine and Diane (Bob) Blais, his sons John (Linda) Busby, Allan Lafontaine, Bryan (Morgan) Busby, his daughter-in-law Tracey Busby, his grandchildren Kayla, Keyana, Kaitlyn, Justice, Riley, Emma, Sidney, his great grandchildren Ty-lynn, Brayleigh, Bella, his sisters-in-law Candace (Dave) Taft, Arlene (Gilles) Beauregard and Robyn (Chris) Madere and several nieces and nephews who will sadly miss him so much.

Dave always had a great smile and a kind word or chocolate for his co-workers at the Region of Niagara. Dave loved sports, fishing, coaching his sons and playing cards on Wednesday nights. Riding his motorcycle became his passion over the last four years.

She enjoyed cards with the girls, curling, bowling, and her backyard pool. She also spent many days and nights as scorekeeper for her kids' slo-pitch team's games.

(June 14, 1921 - August 29, 2010) -  Ruth was predeceased by her husband George with whom she was married to for over 50 years. Also predeceased by her parents, brother Donnie and sisters Fay, Gloria and Helen.  Ruth had two daughters Joyce and Sheila who she was very proud of. They will miss her dearly, as will many other relatives.

Ruth was raised in Niagara Falls and Toronto. She spent her time working hard, showing her great skills in gardening, seam stressing, floral designing and arranging, selling ladies fine wear, managing and also in tourism. A caring person, she helped other people like no other. Through her life, leisure was spent in various pursuits.

She was cremated on Wednesday, September 1st in Niagara Falls. Our celebration of her life will go on forever.

It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of our father Gordon. He died peacefully surrounded by his family on Sunday, August 29, 2010 at the age of 82 years.

Gordon is survived by his daughter Candi Bigford and his son Gord Jr. (Louise). Cherished grandfather of Gerry Rivett, Shannon Bigford (Gabert) and Cameron Bigford (Stella). Great grandfather of Emma and Dylan Rivett and William Bigford. Brother of Martha, Madeline, Vera, Violet and Dorothy. Gord is predeceased by his first wife Jean and his second wife Shirley, son-in-law Dennis Bigford and his brothers Fred and Elmer. He will be missed by many nieces and nephews. 

Gordon's family will accept visitors at the HULSE & ENGLISH FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL, 75 Church St., St. Catharines (905-684-6346) on Thursday, September 2nd from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m., when a service will begin in the chapel. Cremation to follow.

Survived by husband Stan of Niagara-on-the-Lake, son Andrew of Oakland, California and stepchildren Douglas, Graham and Jill. Sister to Karl and Birgit Cebelinski of Sacramento, California.

A memorial service followed by reception will be held on Saturday, September 11th at 11:00 AM at St. John’s Anglican Church, 80 Main Street, Port Dalhousie, Ontario.

Remembrance donations to the ALS Society will support research into a cure for this cruel affliction.

With all the love and support of her precious family, Irene passed peacefully from this world with dignity to join her beloved husband Jim on Sunday, August 29, 2010 at the St. Catharines General Hospital.

Irene and Jim were married at St. George’s Church in 1931 and raised their family in Grace Anglican Church, where she was a member of the Women’s Service Club and performed in many minstrel shows. Many people will remember her and Jim working with their white aprons in the lunch counter they ran on the corner of Welland and Niagara for many years. Saturdays were special times when she would do her home baking and bring in rhubarb and apple pies.

Sadly missed but forever grateful for the extra long life she was granted. Her family will always have wonderful memories of all the good times, playing password only two weeks ago with her grandkids. Going to birthday parties (Karlie), barbecues at Brockton and bingo’s on Wednesday evenings. She lived her life to the fullest and fought to the end for her independence.

Loving mother of Sharon (Gary) Boyle and Diane (Daniel) Harris. “Rene” will also be missed by her “special son” Dwight (Iolanda) Gibson. She wanted all to know how grateful she was to her son-in-law Gary who went above and beyond with his help and love for her. Gram will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by her grandchildren Daniel (Anita) Harris, Robert (Ruth) Harris, Kevin (Debbie) Boyle, Judi Boyle-Krzeczkowski, Shannon (Al) Valenti and Melissa Gibson and Big Gram will also be missed by her great grandchildren Michelle, Daniel, Jamie, Mathew, Karlie and Noah.

Irene was a very strong and dignified lady who loved her family, her grandchildren were her delight and she was so proud of her great grandchildren. Irene will also be missed by many nieces and nephews. She still played cards in two clubs, and all winter looked forward to getting together with the ladies for a game of bridge or 500.

Irene was a member of St. George’s Church and she belonged to the Parochial Society until its final days. She was a remarkable woman who lived nearly 102 years to the fullest and was wonderful example to us all. She will be sadly missed and never forgotten.

Irene’s family will receive friends at St. George’s Anglican Church, 83 Church St., St. Catharines on Thursday from 10:30 to 11 a.m. Funeral Service will follow at 11 a.m. Interment to follow at Victoria Lawn Cemetery, St. Catharines.

It is with great sadness that the family of Laura Pearl (nee Estey) Amos announces her passing on Saturday, August 28, 2010 at the age of 79.

She is lovingly remembered by her husband of 58 years, Erville Amos, her daughters, Heather (Ron), Karen (Norm), and Jennifer. Beloved Grammy of Adam, Martha, Rachel, Susannah, Alexander, Andrew, Laura, and Michael. She will also be missed by many family members throughout British Columbia, Ontario and New Brunswick.

Of Port Colborne died after a courageous battle with cancer at the St. Catharines General Hospital on Saturday, August 28, 2010 in her 66th year.

Loving wife of Alec Balogh for 43 years (August 26, 2010), loving mother of Frank (Christine) Balogh of Dain City, dear Nannie of Dylan and Murray. Norma was predeceased by her parents Norman and Rita Newberry.

Born in Welland she has lived in this area all of her life. Norma worked in real estate for 36 years where she was a broker with Ostryhon and Balogh Coldwell Banker until 2000 and then with A.G. Robins Real Estate as an associate broker for the past 10 years. She was a member of the Welland Real Estate Board and had volunteered with the Navy League and CMT home and school.

Funeral service will be held in Port Colborne on Thursday. September 2nd. Interment will follow in Oakwood Cemetery.

Elma obtained her B.Sc. in Nursing from the University of Western Ontario and was very proud to be the first public health nurse in the Welland and District Health Unit. She was a very dedicated member of Central United Church and had devoted her life to her family.

Carol Joyce "Colleen" Stratton (nee Walden), beloved wife of Walter (deceased) and loving mother to George (Pam), Michael (deceased), Bill (Paul), and Kathy; grandmother of Ginny and Michael Stratton, Ben and Brian Bowen, great grandmother of Kailyn Bowen, beloved sister of Ted Walden and Frank Walden (deceased), and dear friend of "Anna."

Carol Joyce Walden was born in Fort Erie in December 1925 and grew up there on Jarvis Street. Her parents called her their 'little Irish Colleen,' and the name stuck. Colleen worked at Fleet Aircraft during WWII, and after the war met and married her great love, Walter Stratton.

Colleen and Walt raised four children in Crescent Park and then Rochester, New York. Avid boaters on the Niagara River, the Great Lakes, Georgian Bay, and in the Thousand Islands, in 1978 Colleen and Walt retired on their trawler "TUG II" and spent five years boating between the Caribbean and Georgian Bay, after which they returned to their roots to live again on the Niagara River.

Family meant everything to Colleen. She was happiest with family nearby, boating, skiing, cooking, entertaining, and just being together. She had a special flare for gardening and decorating and her lovely homes showed her creative side. Beautiful inside and out, Colleen was a special person, a "classy lady," loved by all for her caring ways and outgoing friendly personality. She was also well known on the Niagara Parkway for riding her red bike - even at 84 years old! Colleen will be truly missed by all.

Beloved daughter of Wilhelmina and Paul Ostrander, treasured sister of Bill, Joan, Nancy, Paul and Laurie, and respected Aunt to her many nieces and nephews. Cathy was Willie and Paul's first-born. She was 61 years of age when she passed away peacefully in the company of her family.

Cathy gave much to her community in her role as a Social Worker focusing on the care of persons confronted by mental illness. She requested that any donations be given to the Outpatient Mental Health Clinic of the Greater Niagara General Hospital or to Hospice Niagara.

Cathy's family wishes to express its sincere gratitude to her ever patient and caring Family Physician Dr. Krass; to the nurses and staff at Queenston Place; and to Cathy's palliative care nurse, Geneva, who made a tremendous difference in promoting Cathy's well-being during her final days.

Cathy's life was often difficult for her, and she faced many challenges along the way. She faced them with determination and dignity, and in her passing showed all who loved her the true meaning of courage and strength. She will be sadly missed.

Cathy will be remembered in a Mass to be held on Monday, August 30th at 10:30 AM at Our Lady of Scapular Church on Thorold-Stone Road in Niagara Falls.

Beloved wife of Jacob Redekop for 60 years, departed to be with Christ on August 26, 2010.

Helen was born in Tombov, Russia August 13, 1925 and immigrated to Canada in 1926. Helen was predeceased by son Alfred (1954) and daughter Loreen (1960). She is also pre- deceased by grandson David (1986). She is survived by her husband Jacob and married children Edward and Cornelia Redekop, Ruth and Philip Pilon, Kenneth and Gina Redekop, John and Nancy Redekop, James and Jayne Redekop.

Also survived by her sister Elizabeth Dyck. Extended family includes 22 grandchildren, eight of whom are married and bring 22 great grandchildren into the family. While we mourn the loss of a beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother.

We “sorrow not as those who have no hope. For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him. For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not precede them which are asleep. For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God, and the dead in Christ shall rise first. Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord. Wherefore comfort one another with these words." 1 Thessalonians, 4:13-18

The family received friends in Vineland on Sunday and Monday. Funeral Service was held on Tuesday, August 31st, with Interment following in Niagara Lakeshore Cemetery.

On Thursday August 26, 2010, Dane passed away suddenly at his home at the age of 56 years.

Dane is the loving father of Lucas Cummings, Jesse Cummings, Jennifer Swartz and Dane Jr. Swartz. Dear brother of Marie, Pearl, Linda, David, Rita, Donald, Barbara, Susan, Dale, Kathy, Brenda and Darryl.

Dane will be fondly remembered and sadly missed by his grandchildren, nieces and nephews and by his good friends Lenny and Don. He was predeceased by his parents, David and Lillie (nee Robinson) Swartz.

A service to celebrate his life will be held in Ridgeway on Monday. Cremation will follow.

ANDELIC, Stipe "Steve" -

Peacefully surrounded by his loving family, on August 25, 2010, at the St. Catharines General Hospital, at the age of 70.

Born in Croatia on October 7, 1939. Beloved husband and best friend of 45 years to Maria. Loving and devoted father of Mirjana (Josip) Peso, Mario (Mary Jane, nee Di Bartolomeo) and Lucy (Doug) Thompson. Didi will be forever in the hearts of his grandchildren Anthony, Joey, Kristina, Brayden and Tyler.

Survived by four brothers and three sisters and their families in Croatia and Venko (Vince) and his family in Oshawa. He also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews and Godchildren. Predeceased by his parents Marin and Neda and his mother and father in law Ivan and Lucija Radan.

After working for many years at Port Weller and Foster Wheeler, Stipe retired in 2004. A special thank you to all family and friends for their care and compassion through Stipe's difficult time.

The funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Alfred's Church, 272 Vine St., St. Catharines on Monday, August 30th 9:30 a.m. The Rite of Committal to follow at Victoria Lawn Cemetery.

It is with broken hearts that we announce the passing of our mother, grandmother and friend. She passed away peacefully at home with her family by her side on Wednesday, August 25, 2010, in her 84th year.

Lovingly remembered by her family: children Rosanne (Scott), Patsy (Dave), John, Wendy (Gord); grandchildren Marylee (Flo), Joseph, Sarah, Matthew, Lily and great-granddaughter Magnolia and sister Rose.  Helen is predeceased by granddaughter Stephanie and three brothers. Helen was a beautiful, caring person full of wisdom and love for everyone around her. She will remain forever in our hearts. A special thank you to Dr. S. Wooder and the palliative care team of nurses from St. Elizabeth’s Health Care.

Cremation has taken place. Visitation and celebration of life service in Grimsby on Monday, August 30th. Urn burial to follow.

Passed away on Wednesday, August 25, 2010 at Greater Niagara General Hospital, after a brief illness at the age of 86.

He was born June 10, 1924 in Niagara Falls to Robert and Georgina (Packer) Stocks. Syd proudly served his country with the Queen's Own Rifles of Canada, going ashore with the 3rd Canadian Infantry Division at Bernieres-sur-Mer on D-Day. His service took him to England, France, Belgium, Holland and Germany.

Syd worked for the Ontario Hydro as a welder until 1969 when the family moved to Tempe, Arizona. He worked as a mailroom supervisor for Ambassador Leather Goods, Imperial Litho and Al White Mailing and as a machinist/fabricator with F.W. & Associates. Syd loved work and the camaraderie so much, he worked until his early 70s. In his second retirement, Syd returned to Niagara Falls to be with old friends and extended family, keeping busy with the Masons and Shriners, Hydro, bowling, church and morning coffee "meetings" with his buddies. He also loved trying his luck at the casino and more often than not came home with more in his pocket than he started with.

Syd was devoted to his family, returning to Arizona at least twice a year, making sure he was at each grandchild's graduation and often joining the family for Christmas and other celebrations. He will be deeply missed by daughters Deborah Stocks and Lesley Crane, son-in-law Dan Crane and his grandchildren Katie, Kellie and Dylan. Syd also leaves behind a sister Georgina (Albert) Corbett. He is survived by many nieces and nephews.

Syd will be remembered for being kind, fair and quick with a silly joke. He was the epitome of a "people person," engaging and ready for an adventure.  Syd's family is thankful for friends and family who kept him company during his last days, and to the staff of Greater Niagara General Hospital who treated him with respect and kindness.

A service of remembrance will be held at Lundy's Lane United Church, 5825 Lowell Ave, on Friday, September 10th with visitation at 11 a.m. – 12 p.m., service at noon and reception following.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Shriners Hospital for Children. Masonic service conducted by Adoniram Lodge #573.

HETHERINGTON & DEANS FUNERAL CHAPEL

Born February 19, 1927, and Peter died on August 25, 2010.

The son of Marjorie and Samuel Webb of Winnipeg, he left home at 17 to join the Canadian navy, and then went to the University of Manitoba when the war ended, then to Calgary where he liked to say he played tight end for the Stampeders.

Finally on to Montreal and a real job with Young and Ribicam and several years service as public relations officer with the 3rd Battalion (Reserve) of the Black Watch, The Royal Highland Regiment of Canada.   Transferred to Toronto in 1959, he entered the marketing field with MacLaren Advertising, eventually forming his own company in 1987. His particular expertise was as a marketing consultant to professional service companies.

In retirement, Peter took up single scull rowing and competed for both Hanlan Boat Club in Toronto and the Ridley Graduate Boat Club in St. Catharines. His passion as a master rower took him to the Head of the Charles race in Boston six times between the ages of 64 and 71. Peter will long be remembered for his singular wit and keen intelligence, his cryptic sense of humor and true devotion to family and comrades. He enjoyed a fulfilling life in business, sport and family.

He leaves his wife of 56 years, Percy; three sons and their wives, Duncan and Stephana, Bruce and Kira and James and Hilary; six grandchildren, Theodore, Flora Grace, Kathryn, Madeline, Angus and Fergus; niece Linda and her husband Ian and their two daughters, Jennifer and Christine.

The family wishes to express its profound gratitude to the staff at Chateau Gardens in Niagara-on-the-Lake for the exceptional love and care, humor and compassion for Peter over the past two and a half years.

Cremation has taken place. A memorial service at St. Mark's Anglican Church, Niagara-on-the-Lake will be held on Friday, September 3rd at 11 o'clock.

(February 4, 1912 – August 24, 2010) - Passed away peacefully at West Lincoln Memorial Hospital, Grimsby on Tuesday, August 24, 2010 in her 99th year.

Dear and loving mother of Bill (Ingrid), Marjorie, Phyllis (Frank) and Mary Ann (Moe). Cherished grandmother of Linnea, Frankie (Michelle), Sherry (Todd), Jeff, Susan (Jody), Paul (Jenn) and Mat (Brooke) and great-grandchildren Ryan, Larissa, Breanne, Taylor, Ace, Owen, Tristan, Caelan, Aidan and Teagan.

Also missed by sister Pauline Puinno and brother Nick Chuhay. Predeceased by grandson Erik Balusiak and siblings Sophie Matkowski, Mike and John Chuhay.

A funeral service will take place in Grimsby on Friday, August 27th. Burial at Fonthill Cemetery.

Mary was a farm girl from Winnepegosis who worked hard during her long life. Now her chores are done.

Peacefully passed away at the Greater Niagara General Hospital with family by his side on August 24, 2010 at the age of 88 years.

Husband of the late Rita (nee Vaillancourt). Dear father of Mary Gillespie (Peter), Eva Schneider (Gerry), the late Hubert Gignac, (Valerie), Georges Gignac (Yvonne), Giselle Perkins and the late David Gignac. Brother of Julianna Horth, Jean-Louis Gignac, Ovide Gignac and the late Martin Gignac, Martial Gignac, Normand Gignac, Ernestine Dion and Estelle Menard.

Proud grandfather of 15 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren and seven great great-grandchildren. He is survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends, and will be deeply missed by his dearest friend Justine Landry.

Absalon was employed for 39 years as a Chief Operator with Cyanamid Welland Plant.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Antoine de Padoue Church, Niagara Falls on Saturday morning at 11:00 a.m. Cremation will follow.

Ted served in the military from 1942-1946 with an Honorable Discharge from the 8th Princess Louise N.B. Hussars. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch #24 and a lifetime member of the Niagara Falls Lions Club. 

As per Ted's wishes, cremation has taken place. A private interment will take place at a later date in Victoria Lawn Cemetery.

Beloved husband for 59 years of Berneice (nee Scott). Cherished father of six sons; Brian (Sue), Kim (Cathy), Mark (Darlene), David (Debbie), Neil (Peggy) and Ian (Christine) Blanchard and daughters Nancy DiMarcantonio (Tony) and Gloria Blanchard (Mike). Lovingly remembered by his 17 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Dear brother-in-law of Ronald Scott, Howard Willson and Alfred Sekel. Predeceased by his parents Clarence and Lucy Blanchard, sisters Anne Willson and June Sekel.

Clarence retired from Atlas Steel after 42 years of service. He was a volunteer firefighter at Stop 19 Firehall, coached for Welland Minor Hockey and Welland Slo-pitch and was an avid horse racing fan.

Passed away after a courageous battle with lymphoma at the Greater Niagara General Hospital on Monday, August 23, 2010 at the age of 76.

Beloved husband of the late Huguette Carrie (2005). Dearly loved father of David Carrie, Lynn Carrie and Lisa (Anthony) Martino, all of Niagara Falls. Loving grandfather of James Bailey, Luca and Sofia Martino. Loving son of Angelo and Angela Carrie.

Together with his business partner and lifelong friend Sam LaRosa, Chubby owned and operated Dominion Paving for 55 years and will be sadly missed by all who knew him.

Doug was born in Dunnville and grew up in Moulton Station. He was the owner and operator of Cosby’s Septic & Excavating Service Ltd. in Sherkston and was the former postmaster of Sherkston.

Born in Welland, Mr. Hamm has lived in the area for most of his life. He was employed at U Carbide for over 35 years. He also was a volunteer firefighter for 30 years. Richard loved Nascar Racing, travelling, his grandchildren and as well as the O.G.S..

Beloved husband of Colette “Co Co” Chamberland-Hamm. Dear father of Jeff (Jenn) Hamm of Thorold and Jennifer Hamm (Kelly) of Wainfleet. Grandfather of Richie, Rheagan and Cody. Also survived by his sister Joyce (Joe Balensky) of Welland and his brother Wilbur Hamm of Alberta.

On Monday August 23, 2010, Betty passed away peacefully at Douglas Memorial Hospital with her family by her side at the age of 77.

Beloved wife of Elwood for 52 years. Dear and loving mother of Cindy (Lou) Baker, Wayne (Janette) Morgan, John (Susan) Morgan and Judy (Steve) Grant. Cherished grandmother of Brenda, John, Josh, Ryan, Eric, Craig, Ben, Nikki, Clay, Graham, Andrew and James and great grandmother of Brianna, Ella, Charlotte and Kamdyn.

Survived by sister, Mary Lou, brother Bruce (Mike) and by many nieces and nephews. Predeceased by parents Florence and Herbert Kelley and sisters Ruby, Dorothy, Ruth Ann and brothers Joe, Pete, Bill, Sam.

Betty lived in Ridgeway all her life as a homemaker, wife and mother. She was very proud of all of her 12 grandchildren and four great grandchildren. She kept every note, card, artwork that was ever given to her from the grandchildren -- 30 years' worth!

A service to celebrate her life will be held in Ridgeway on Friday morning, interment to follow at Ridgeway Memorial.

In his 80th year, passed away peacefully at GNGH on August 23, 2010 with family by his side.

Predeceased by his parents Mary Edith and James Allan Robertson, his grandparents Mamie and Eubelus who raised him due to his mother’s lengthy illness. He is survived by his sister Mary Francis (Len, predeceased) of FL, his wife Lucille, their children and stepchildren Christine, Mary Ann (Brian), James Jr., James Lafrance (Lee-Anne), Maureen Muise (Elden), grandchildren Lyndsay, Ryan, Stephanie, Scott, Simon Viner, Brittany Billingsley (Dan) and Andrew Renaud. James was predeceased by his step-daughter Colleen Lamb-Anthony and step-son Little Joey Lafrance.

He served in the military for one year, nine months and 26 days, with the Princess Patricia Canadian Light Infantry (PPCLI) in Calgary and became a member of the Special Parachute Company. He came back to NF and worked for the CN Railroad. During his last two years on the railway, he completed Grades 12 and 13 while working the afternoon shift. He then moved to Hamilton with his family, where he attended Teacher’s College, but was unable to complete the year due to financial challenges.

He started a 31-year career at Stelco Hilton Works, working numerous positions and retiring as a Quality Control Inspector. While working at Stelco, he attended McMaster University on a part-time basis, graduating on November 15, 1974 with a B.A. Degree, majoring in Political Science. He retired at the age of 62, shortly after moving back to NF to start a new life with Lucille.  Jim will be sadly missed by his wife, family and friends.

Visitation and Christian service will be held in Niagara Falls on Thursday. Cremation and a private interment will take place at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, please make donations to St. Pat’s Church for the breakfast program for the children of St. Pat’s and St. Mary’s Schools. Jim spent many hours at St. Pat’s Parish Hall where he was always welcomed as one of the local youth.

Many thanks to the staff at GNGH, Dr. R. Safranyos and his associates, the Physiotherapists and Occupational Therapists who provided motivation and encouragement. Thanks also to the hospital Chaplain and the Priests for their spiritual support.

Passed away suddenly at his residence while enjoying his favourite pasttime, working on his motorcycle, on Monday August 23, 2010 at the age of 61.

Joe had worked as a hoisting engineer for many years and made many friendships in the various places he worked.

Passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 22, 2010 at the Greater Niagara General Hospital at the age of 87.

Beloved husband of Lily for 61 years. Dear father of Jim. Cherished Grandpa of Stacey and Sean Bain. Brother-in-law of David (Janet) Millar.

John was a veteran serving overseas in Italy during the Second World War, where he was a part of invasions on both Sicily and Salerno.   John's family would like to extend its thanks to Dr. Allison MacTavish and the Doctors and staff in both the ER and ICU at GNGH.

John's family will receive friends at Drummond Hill Presbyterian Church on Thursday from 1 - 2 p.m., followed by a service 2 o'clock with the Rev. Wally Hong officiating. Cremation will follow.

Born in Port Colborne, Ontario, he was predeceased by his father Paul F.J. Petrie, Sr. (1983), mother Audrey Jean (George) Petrie in 2007, sister Charlotte Rae Ann in 1948 and sister Penny (Varuna) Lee Petrie in 2009.

He is survived by his wife Elizabeth (Beth) Petrie, a brother Larry (Marie) Petrie and children Paul (Wendy) Petrie, Tammy (Scott) Hall, Tammy (Alain) Lemire, Carol Newman (Ron Holmes), E.J. (Melanie) Jones, Jeff Jones (Sinceray Hightower) and Mark Newman. Paul was a cherished grandfather of 13, a great-grandfather of one, and uncle & brother-in-law to many.

Paul was retired from General Motors of Canada after 37 years and most of that time was spent at the Glendale Avenue location. His greatest enjoyments in his life were his family and his passion for hunting and fishing. He will be missed by his hunting buddies Buck Gobel, Gary Ferguson, Randy Sheldon and Eddie Cahill.

Special thanks to Kim from CCAC, who started as his nurse but quickly became a treasured friend to him and his family. We will be always grateful for your care, compassion and unique knack for making him laugh. Special thanks also to his doctor and personal friend, Dr. John Taliano, and also to Dr. Levesque and the oncology team at St. Catharines General. There are so many more to mention and we apologize for not being able to name all of those who were so kind to us during his illness.

Survived by brother Bob Falk (Iris) of Victoria, BC, sisters-in-law Emma Lesser of Toronto, Lena Schock of Oshkosh, Wisconsin, brothers-in-law Harry Schock (Midge) of Niagara Falls and Art Dyck of Leader, Saskatchewan.

Mary was a member of the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd. She worked as a nurse's aide at Dorchester Manor for 25 years. Thank you to Dr. Pang and the staff of Villa Fiore for their care and compassion and to the volunteers for their friendship.

Cremation has taken place. Visitation in Niagara Falls on Tuesday. A family graveside service with Pastor Dean Willich will be held Wednesday, August 25th at Pleasantview Memorial Gardens, Fonthill.

Passed away suddenly after a fall during his morning walk, on Saturday, August 21, 2010 at the age of 82.

Beloved husband of 57 years to Helen (nee Greco) and father of Dan (Cathy) and Jack (Joan). Cherished grandfather of Jason, Melissa, James, Jonathan and Kristina.

He will be sadly missed by his brother Albert Toppari (Jean), his sister Marlene Hannula (Oliver) and his many nieces, nephews and cousins.  Also survived by his brother-in-law Joe Greco (Mary) and his sisters-in-law Sylvia Pizzale (Sevy), Norma Lemire (Maurice) and Helene Greco (wife of his late brother-in-law Don).

He was born in South Porcupine and lived in Timmins until moving to Niagara Falls in 1965.  He worked as a construction inspector for the City of St. Catharines until his retirement 18 years ago.  He liked being outdoors, and always went for long walks, enjoying the natural beauty of Niagara. He cross-country skied all his life, whenever there was enough snow (never a problem in Timmins!).

A Funeral service in celebration of his life will be held in Niagara Falls on Friday. Interment will follow at Fairview Cemetery.

Beloved wife of the late Nicholas Warankie (1987). Mary was a faithful and beloved member of the Welland Broadway Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses. During her working life, she was a dietary aide for 18 years at Sunset Haven.

COONS, James Ronald –

(1942- 2010) – It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Jim at the Welland County General Hospital on August 20, 2010 in his 68th year after a six-month struggle with pancreatic cancer.

Beloved husband of Nadyne for 45 years. Loving father of Michelle (George) Haskin and Michael (Shannon) Coons. Cherished grandfather of Catrina (5 years old) and Anna (4 years old) Coons of Denver, Colorado. Survived by many nieces and nephews. Dear brother of Marc, Gaye, Linda, Peter and Donald.

Jim worked as a pipefitter at Atlas Steels for 15 years and at General Motors Plant 2 until retirement in 2003. Jim’s favourite place in the sun was at the cottage on Rice Lake with a fishing pole in his hands or working in the gardens.

The Funeral Mass will be celebrated at the Parish Community of St. Kevin, 303 Niagara Street, Welland, where Jim was a member his entire life, on Monday, August 23rd at 10:00 a.m. followed by a reception in the church hall.  Cremation to follow. A private family interment will take place at a later date.

Reno was a 3rd and 4th degree member with the Knights of Columbus, Hennepin Council 1652 and Hennepin Assembly 1831. Reno was also a member of the St. Vincent de Paul Society at St. Patrick’s Church, the Sertoma Club, the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 51 and an Honourary Charter Member of the Canadian Society of Club Managers, a fellow of the Professional Club Managers and a life long member of St. Patrick’s Church.

Reno worked as a manager for 30 years in such establishments as The Niagara Falls Club, the University of Toronto Faculty Club, Cherry Hill Golf Club and the Port Credit Yacht Club. Reno also volunteered of his time with the Canadian Red Cross, the Arthritis Society and the Outreach Program.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Monday at 11:30 a.m. at St. Patrick’s Church, Niagara Falls. The Rite of Committal will follow at Fairview Cemetery.

(July 1, 1930 - August 20, 2010) - With deepest sadness and regret, Anne announces the passing of her loving and dearly loved sister and best friend, Victoria, on August 20, 2010 at the intensive care unit of the Juravinski (Henderson) Hospital in Hamilton, Ontario.

Victoria is predeceased by her parents William and Stepanina Prytula (1981, 1982). She is survived by several cousins and their families in Ontario, Manitoba and British Columbia. She will also be remembered by many devoted and valued friends and associates, some of whom called her "Miss Vicky." Her personal preferred title was "Queen Victoria," which she used frequently.

Passed away peacefully at the Port Colborne General Hospital on Wednesday, August 18th, 2010, in his 92nd year, in the company of family.

He leaves behind his loving wife of 61 years Lidia. He will be greatly missed by his children Maria (Angelo) Aliberti, Carmine (Connie) and his five granddaughters Rosalynn, LeeAnn (Jeff), Jennifer, Jessica, Michelle and new great granddaughter Ellie. Predeceased by his son Frank he will be sadly missed by many friends and extended family members both here and in Italy.

Michele was born in Poggiomarino, Naples, Italy and immigrated to Canada in 1953. He worked for many years at CN Rail before retiring in 1983. He loved bocce, bowling and most of all playing cards. He was known as a joker, a story teller and with a glass of wine in his hand, had a toast for every occasion. He will be remembered as a man who loved his family, his friends and his garden.

The family would like to thank the Palliative Care and Nursing staff at Port Colborne General Hospital.

Mass of Christian Burial will be said at St Michael's Roman Catholic Church, Fort Erie on Monday at 11 am. Interment to follow at St Joseph's Cemetery, Fort Erie.

Passed away at the Welland Hospital on Wednesday, August 18th, 2010 at the age of 65.

Beloved husband of Ruth (Hancock) for 41 years. Besides his wife he leaves a daughter, Natalie, of Brantford, Ontario. He also leaves one brother Benoit (friend Christine) of Welland, Ontario and one sister Mary (late Blondin) Dufour of Rawdon, Quebec.

He leaves behind three sister-in-laws Rosanne, Janine and Patricia all of Welland. Paul was predeceased by four brothers Rosaire, Romaine, Jean and Emile. He was also predeceased by both parents Gerard and Florance (Paradif), both from Quebec.

Paul and his wife Ruth were both dedicated to their church, Windmill Point Church of Christ (Disciples).

There will be a service Saturday, August 28th at Windmill Point Church of Christ (Disciples) in Ridgeway, Ontario, where family and close friends will meet for a memorial service for Paul. Cremation has taken place, as per Paul’s wishes.

Dear sister of Pat (Aldo) Visentin and Peter (Adeline) Cerantola of Niagara Falls, Rita (the late Frank) Bortolazzo and Evo (Betty) Cerantola of California. She will be sadly missed by many nieces, nephews and cousins and by her many friends at St. Patrick’s Church where she was a devout parishioner and a member of the Catholic Women’s League for over 50 years.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated Saturday at 10:00 a.m. at St. Patrick’s Church, Niagara Falls.  The Rite of Committal will follow at Fairview Cemetery.

(As written by Jim) - Passed away August 17, 2010.

Jim is survived by the love of his life and best friend Sophie, to whom he was married for 41 years. Sophie was there for him throughout his illness and never wavered in her love and caring attention.  Also survived by his wonderful children that he loved dearly and was so proud of; Stephanie (Paul Tukker) and Michael (Claudine) as well as “Grandpa Soup’s” best little man Luke, and Luke’s little sister Adella.

Jim is survived by his beloved brother Peter (Gitte), loving sisters Susan (Dave) Forgeron and their lovely daughter Rachael, Violet (the late Murray) Priddle and Charlotte (Chuck) Gerdes. Also survived by several nieces and nephews whose company and friendship always brought him great joy. Jim was predeceased by his beloved parents, Fred (1985) and Frances (1986). Also predeceased by brothers Alex (Thelma), Fred (Sheila) and Gordon (Margaret) as well as his sister Margaret (the late Max) Slade.

Jim came to Canada in 1946 from his birthplace Leeds, England and lived in St. Catharines and Thorold for the rest of his life.  He retired from Hayes Dana in 2006 after nearly 38 years and met some great people during his time there.  Jim enjoyed fishing trips with his best buddies Denis Egoroff, Carl Stevens, Gerry Fleming and the late George Kempson, although truth be told, there were never that many fish caught. Jim recently took up golf, but fate determined that he wouldn’t have the time to get much good at it.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Julia Church, 251 Glenridge Ave., St. Catharines on Friday at 1:30 p.m.  Cremation has taken place.  The Rite of Committal to follow at Victoria Lawn Cemetery, St. Catharines.

Memorial donations may be made to the Palliative Care Unit of the St. Catharines General Hospital.

Leona died peacefully and suddenly at Northland Pointe on Tuesday, August 17, 2010 in her 91st year.

Dick retired from Ontario Power Generation after 26 years of service. He was an avid horseman and he owned thoroughbreds at Fort Erie and Woodbine race tracks. He will be missed by his many nieces and nephews and by his many friends and colleagues.

At Dick’s request, cremation has taken place. Visitation in Niagara Falls on Saturday, with a private family funeral service to follow at a later date.

Joe was employed at Atlas Steels for 35 years retiring in 1991.

Peacefully at her daughter’s  home in Smithville on Saturday, August 14, 2010, Isabel Catherine Hodgkins (nee Snyder) of Loring and Smithville, Ontario, in her 81st year.

Beloved wife of Clayton Hodgkins for over 62 years.  Dearly loved mother of Joanne (Scott) Battersby, Janet (Daryl) Joyner, and Marianne (Fred) Brandt.  Cherished grandmother of Tricia (Jeff), Dylan, Daaron, Janelle (Crescenzio "Chris"), Kurt (Nina) and Kyle (Laura), and great-grandmother of Stephanie, Ryan, Hunter, Rose, George, Caden and Colby.

Also survived by her brother-in-law David (Taft) Davis.  Predeceased by her mother Mabel and father Hugh,  sister Maxine Davis and brother Jim Snyder. She will also be sadly missed by her nieces, nephews and many friends.

Together, Clayton and Isabel owned and operated Hodgkins Hardware in Smithville before retiring to Loring in 1987.

A funeral service will be held in Smithville on Tuesday, August 17th.

Born December 31st, 1937, and passed away peacefully on Saturday August 14th, 2010 in his 73rd year.

He was self employed for many years in the food industry.

Visitation will be held in Niagara Falls on Tuesday from 5-7, and will be followed by a service at Fairview Mausoleum.

(April 6, 1942 – August 14, 2010) - After living his life with integrity, grace, courage and strength, Sandy is now safely back in the arms of his Mother and Father.  It is with great sadness his family announces his passing, in profound peace, surrounded by his family and friends enveloped by their love.

After a brief but courageous battle with cancer, Sandy leaves behind his wife Sheila Jones, his son Shawn, daughter Tara Melowsky (Craig) and son Tim. He also leaves behind six grandchildren; Robby, Annie Prevost, Krystle, Cory, Nicholas, Steven and Benjamin and great-grandchildren Aidan and Ava Leigh (Born August 16th).

Sandy is survived by his sisters Donna Labbe, Carol Olm (Frank), Pam Farr and his brothers Dale and Brian. Sandy will be sadly missed by many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, many dear friends and his ex-wife and lifetime friend Norma O’Dell. He also leaves his long time “brother” and friend Rick Alakas and family, especially Melissa.

Sandy lived a life of service to his community and fellow workers. He worked for General Motors, St. Catharines for more than 31 years, serving as a CAW Local 199 Shop/Committee Person. He served on the National GM Master Bargaining Committee, negotiating at the local level. He was a CAW Community Based Organizer. He started the coalition “Fighting For Our Working Future” (Purple Ribbon Campaign).

He was a member of the Canada Cuba Friendship Association and hosted Fiesta Nicaragua for 17 years. He was a founding member of the Golden Horseshoe Social Action Committee and Niagara Blues and Jazz Society. For the last 14 years Sandy served as a Welland City Councillor of Ward 6.

At Sandy’s request, cremation has taken place.  To celebrate Sandy’s life, his family will receive friends at the CAW Hall, 16 Steel Street, Welland on Saturday, August 21st at 1:00 p.m.

Sandy was a strong believer in human rights, women’s rights and equality for the working people.  Memorial donations to Women’s Place or the Hope Centre would be greatly appreciated.  The family wishes to pay a special tribute to the Woolcott Wing for the outstanding care, compassion and dedication given to Sandy.

After a long and courageous battle, cancer claimed her body but never conquered her spirit, on Saturday, August 14, 2010 at the West Haldimand General Hospital in her 36th year.

(October 31, 1929 - August 14, 2010) - Passed away Saturday, August 14, 2010 at the Greater Niagara Hospital with her children at her side.

She began her life in Liverpool, England, the middle child of Annie and William Anderson. She was quite the student and won a scholarship to the prestigious Seafield College. She was an avid reader which remained her passion for the rest of her life.

Marie married Richard in 1949 and in 1953 they emigrated to Canada for a better life. They lived in several provinces and eventually settled in Ontario. Marie spoke fondly of the staff at Millennium Trail Manor and made many new friends.

Marie was the dear wife of the late Richard. Loving mother of the late John Simpson (Ruby), Barbara Dunwoody (Ken) and Brian Simpson (Lori). Dear grandma of Derek, Mark, Michael, Jennilee, Lisa and Adam. She also leaves to mourn many relatives in the UK. We will miss her.

survived by his brother in law Jerry Arnold and by his sisters in law Joan Macauley, Carole Tucker and Ellen (Bernie) Chisolm.

Norman was born in Montreal in 1929. He met his wife Lois in the R.C.A.F. reserve and they were married in 1954. Norman joined the C.N.R. as an apprentice working on steam locomotives and retired 35 years later as a First Aid and CPR Instructor.  Norman and Lois resided in Montreal until 1993 when they moved to St. Catharines.

Norman was a Scout Master and continued in Scouting to become the Assistant District Commissioner.  Rt. Wor. Bro. W. Norm Thomson was a member and a Past Master of
Argyle Lodge #65 G.R.Q., A.F. & A.M. Norm served Argyle Lodge as master for three years. He was a Grand Lodge Officer in the Grand Lodge of Quebec (1992). He was a member of St. Andrew's Lodge #661 A.F. & A.M., G.R.C., in St. Catharines and a 32 Degree Mason of the Scottish Rite. He was also a member and Past President of the Scottish Craftsmen's Association of St. Catharines and District. He was an active member of the Probus Club of St. Catharines for many years.

A special thank you to the nursing staff and the doctors of the St. Catharines General Hospital for their care and support.

(1911- 2010) - Passed away peacefully on August 13, 2010 in her 99th year.

Dorothy will be sadly missed by her son Jerry (Karin), 15 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

Peacefully at Linhaven Long-Term Care Facility on Friday, August 13, 2010 at the age of 86.

Predeceased by his wife Alllison (Hall) in 1999. Lovingly remembered by his three dautghters Cheryl Fraser (Dave), Colleen Smith and Diane Smith (Ross Harris). Beloved grandpa of Amy Gracey (Byron), Rob Fraser (Nicole) and Rachel Harris. Special great-grandpa of Olivia, Charlotte and Liam Gracey.

Tom was a dedicated longtime employee of Foster Wheeler. He was an avid sports fan and thoroughly enjoyed wood carving and stamp collecting. Tom celebrated his Scottish heritage at many Highland Games and Robbie Burns Nights. He had a great love for traditional Scottish music, especially the bag pipes. For many years, tom was a member of Scotlea Presbyterian Church.

Tom's life was truly enriched by the genuine loving care he received from the nursing staff, recreation directors and volunteers at Linhaven. The family is most thankful for these many acts of kindness.

At Tom's request, cremation has taken place. A Service of Celebration and Remembrance will be held later in September.

Rae had worked for many years as a medical receptionist for Dr. Peter Davidson.  A longtime member of Our Lady of the Scapular Church, Rae was also a qualified swimming instructor and a lifeguard with the Red Cross and for many years, she was a volunteer with the ladies auxiliary at G.N.G.H.  She will be sadly missed.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated Tuesday at 11:00 a.m. at our Lady of the Scapular Church, Niagara Falls. Cremation will follow with interment at a later date in Fairview Cemetery.

It is with profound sadness, the family announces the passing of Greg Byer on August 12, 2010. Sadly Greg passed away in his 46th year at the Douglas Memorial Hospital surrounded by his family.

Greg will forever be missed by his mother Gloria Krving (Paul pre deceased) and father Bob (Mary) Byer. He will always be remembered by his brothers Terry (Donna), Gary (Tammy), Donald, Stephen (Kerrie) and sister Michelle (Michael). He was predeceased by his mother Ellen Fleming, his brother Peter Fleming and his sisters Mildred Richardson and Myrtle Fleming.

Orville worked at Robin Hood Mills and retired in 1982. He was a member of the Port Colborne Baptist Church.

Funeral service will be held at the Port Colborne Baptist Church on Saturday, August 14th at 11:00 a.m.  Cremation will follow, with interment of ashes in Oakwood Cemetery at a later date.

(1916 - 2010) - Passed away peacefully on August 12, 2010.

Predeceased by his wife Maxine, brothers Richard, James, Edward, and Cecil.  Cherished father of James Smithson, William (Ruth) Smithson, Leslie (Anne) Smithson.  Loving grandfather of Jesse and Billy, great grandfather of Adonis and Anna.  Bill is survived by his sister Violetta Smithson, and brothers Douglas and Garth Smithson, and by his sister in law Joyce.

Bill was employed by TRW for 31 years retiring in 1973.  Active member of the TP Old Guard Association, past member of The Grantham Optimist.  Bill owned Thoroughbred Race Horses at Fort Erie Race Track and he was happiest when playing cards and dancing.

Spirited mother of Candy Harris and the late Patrick Vendramin, second mother to Cathy Sedore and wife of the late Gino Vendramin, passed away at the Greater Niagara General Hospital on Thursday, August 12, 2010 at the age of 85.

Rosie was the cherished grandmother of Tom and Sandra Murphy and “Little Candy” (1977) and great-grandmother of Madison Murphy. She will be greatly missed by her sisters, Veda Jamestee ( the late Frank) and Kitty Decicco (the late Carl) and many much-loved nieces and nephews.

Rosie was predeceased by her parents, Maria Felicia and Pasquale Del Duca; her brothers Tony (Lucy), Myer (Louise) and Angelo and her sisters Antoinette Campisano (Dominic), Angela Farrington (Gordon), Elsie Payson (Don), Gerardo, Pasquale Jr., Maria and Esterina.

Rosie was a proud waitress for most of her life, working for 20 years at the Holiday Inn By The Falls, and before that owning, along with her husband, Gino’s Restaurant in Chippawa.  During that time she was mother to many, offering sage advice to the teenagers in town whether solicited or not.

A Funeral Service in celebration of her life will be held on Monday in Niagara Falls.  Entombment will follow at Fairview Mausoleum.

Passed away peacefully at Douglas Memorial Hospital on August 11th, 2010 in her 94th year.

Beloved wife of the late William Brooke (1979). Loving mother of Robert Brooke (Judy) of Fort Erie, John Brooke of Welland, Maureen O’Neill of Doha,Qatar, (Middle East) and Mark Brooke (Catherine) of Portage LaPrarie, Manitoba.

Cherished grandmother of O’Neill Brooke (Tina), Tavis O’Neill (Lora), Brooke O’Neill, Laura Brooke (Ben), Heather Brooke ( Jon ), Tracey Taube (Elliott) and Bobbi-Jo Neal (Shawn). Great-grandmother of Angel, Sasha and Emma. She will be lovingly remembered by her nieces and nephews. Also predeceased by her sister Maureen Stevens.

Born in England, Evelyn spent her formative years in Barbados before moving to Rimouski, Kenogami and then Quebec City where she raised her family. She later settled in Welland where she continued her passion for volunteering at the Church, hospitals and in her community. This volunteer work included several years at the Woolcott Wing at the Welland Hospital.

Evelyn was also a world traveller and enjoyed her love for archeology everywhere she visited. An accomplished artist she also enjoyed giving pottery lessons in her basement. She was an active and dedicated member of St. David’s Anglican Church and was the recipient of the Order Of Niagara in 2008.

Honouring Evelyn’s wishes, cremation has taken place.  The Funeral Service, conducted by Reverend John Course, will be held at St. David’s Anglican Church, 369 Thorold Road West, Welland on Thursday, August 19th at 11:00.  Interment in Fonthill Cemetery to follow.

Passed away peacefully in her 87th year on Wednesday, August 11, 2010 with her family by her side. 

Merle was predeceased by her husband Robert Carpenter. She will be greatly missed by her daughter Karen Crowe (late David A. Crowe) and sons Robert Carpenter (Marge) and Bruce Carpenter (Maureen Cromack). An adoring grandmother who will be sadly missed by Elizabeth DeCrane (Chris), Marie Crowe, Samantha Crowe, and David Crowe and her great-grandchildren Laura, Rhylee, Autumn, and Jake.

Merle worked for many years as a social worker for the Region of Niagara and for several years prior at the Sheraton Foxhead. A special thank you to Dr.'s Foster and Zimakis, Beth Ann, and the wonderful staff in ICU at GNGH.

It is with great sadness we announce his passing. Following a lengthy illness, Stan was called home in his 81st year on Wednesday, August 11, 2010.

Dad will be missed by his two sons and their families, Grant (Kim), and Ian (Kim). Grandpa Stan will forever be in the hearts of his grandchildren Brittany, Robert, Carley, Katelyn, and Kelly. Stan will be missed by Dolly Muir, the mother of his two sons. Stan's companion and best friend, Helen Embury will cherish the years they enjoyed together.  He is survived by his brothers Jim (Peg), and Earle (Sheila) and sister Eileen Scott, and brother-in-law Doug Rodenburg. Predeceased by his sister Ilah Rodenburg.

Stan was a retired teacher with the DSBN after 35 years of service. He was a 40+ year member of the Jordan Lions Club and a longtime member of Knox Presbyterian Church where he served faithfully as an elder and usher.

According to Stan's wishes, cremation has taken place.  A memorial service in his memory at Knox Presbyterian Church, St. Catharines will be held on Monday, August 16, at 11 a.m.

(1914 – 2010) - Mable (Mae) Wren (nee Bartholomew, nee Ilkka), passed away peacefully in Hamilton on August 11th, 2010 at the age of 96 years.

Mae is sadly missed by her friends and loved ones, and is survived by her brother Edward, son Gary and his wife Rachel, daughter Joan, grandsons Tyler and Edward, and great-grandson Dustin.

Mae was a passionate follower of Pentecostal and Evangelical teachings all her life.  She loved music and was an accomplished pianist, often playing lively hymns for her family, friends and at church services.  She shared this joy and passion even in her final years with staff and friends at Townsview Extendicare in Hamilton.

Visitation in Ridgeway on Saturday.  A graveside service will then be held at Greenwood Cemetery at 1:30.

It is with great sadness that the family of Marcel Joseph Hardy announces his sudden passing on August 10th, 2010 at age 56.

Marcel was a cherished son of Vivianne (Beauparlant). Dear brother of Jean-Guy (wife Monique) of Orleans Ontario, Dahlia (husband Nick) Moccia and Doris Hardy both of Welland, and brother-in-law to Fernande of Port Colborne. Marcel was predeceased by his father Roland (1997) and brother Raymond (2004).

Marcel was born and raised in Welland, and lived here all his life. He will be sadly missed by all his family and friends that surrounded him throughout his lifetime.

As per Marcel and his family’s wishes, cremation has taken place.  Marcel's family will be receiving relatives and friends at Eglise du Sacré-Coeur (Sacred Heart Church), 72 Empire Street, Welland on Saturday from 10 - 11 am, followed by a funeral mass that will start at 11 am.  Procession to Holy Cross Cemetery for burial of ashes will proceed after the funeral mass.

Evelyn is also survived by her good friend Pam Kokoshki.  A special and warm thank you to Mary Prince for her devoted care given to Evelyn during the past six months.

Evelyn was a proud WWII Veteran serving in the R.A.F. in England and Ireland. She will be greatly missed by her friends and fellow legion members in St. Catharines.

It is with profound sadness that the family of Jimmy Lorenzo announces his peaceful, dignified passing at Hospice Niagara on Tuesday, August 10, 2010 at the age of 70.

Loving father of Erin (Anthony) Giallonardo, Shannon (John) Richard and Dave (Angela) Lorenzo. \"Grandpa Diesel\" will be lovingly remembered by his grandchildren Ava, Julia and Mya. Sadly missed by his longtime partner Brenda Pandell and her son Mackenzie. Predeceased by his parents William and Elizabeth Lorenzo.

Jimmy retired as a teacher with the Niagara Catholic District School Board after 30 years of service and during his career he taught at St. Philomena, Sacred Heart and St. Charles schools. He was also an avid slo-pitch player in Niagara and Florida and travelled to many tournaments with his Brantford-based team. He was also an active member for 25 years at White Oaks.

At Jimmy's request cremation has taken place. A funeral service will be held in Niagara Falls on Saturday.

Passed away at his home on Tuesday August 10, 2010 after a courageous battle with cancer at the age of 57.

He will be lovingly remembered by his many nieces, nephews, friends and family members. Ken was predeceased by his parents Albert and Marjorie, his brothers Roy and Earl and his sister Lyla.

(1942 - 2010) - Joyce is at peace after a long struggle with Alzheimer's disease, passing away on August 10, 2010 at Linhaven Merritt Respite, with Patricia and Linhaven friends at her side.

Joyce was predeceased by her parents Cyril & Iva Taylor. Beloved sister of Gloria & Bill Annand (“her favourite brother-in-law"). Also survived by loving nieces and nephews Bill (Siobhan) Annand & family, Ken (Jen) Annand, Jamie Annand and Kristen Annand, Patricia (Ed) Pafford and family, Molly Sloan, Zach Sloan, Shane Annand and Mackenzie Vyse, Susanne Annand and husband Don McGowan.  Also survived by forever friend, confidante and travelling companion Ava Theisen. Joyce will also be missed by many aunts, uncles and cousins here and in England.

Joyce was a Registered Nurse, graduating from The Mack Training School class of 1964 and worked many years at the St. Catharines General Hospital in the delivery room.

The family would like to extend a heartfelt thanks to Teresa, her longtime caregiver, for her support to our family. Teresa's loving care of Joyce will never be forgotten. Thanks also to the wonderful caring staff at Adams Adult Day Care Program, as well as Adams and Marritt Respite for their loving compassionate care, always going above and beyond for Joyce and our family.

Suddenly at home, while working in his garden on August 10, 2010 in his 94th year.

Beloved husband of Alma for 64 years. Loving father of Elizabeth Brooker (Bill) of St. Catharines, ON, Bob Thompson (Ann) of Perth, ON and Lynne Mikes (Tony) of Mission, B.C. Proud grandfather of 10 and great grandfather of nine. He will be missed by his sisters-in-law Mary Laidlaw and Ann Rogers, as well as his eight nieces and nephews. Sadly missed by Ophelia. Predeceased by his parents George and Alma, his brother Lloyd and his brothers-in-law Wallace Laidlaw and Clive Rogers.

Joe was a well-respected teacher, administrator and superintendant of the former Niagara South Board of Education. He also served as chairman of the Children’s Centre Board. He was a member of Lundy’s Lane United Church since 1946, and was a member of the Niagara Falls Lions’ Club for 52 years, with 50 years of perfect attendance.  Joe was a member of the Niagara Falls Horticultural Society, winning many prizes over the years and was very proud of his gardening skills. He also loved to curl and golf.

A service under the Auspices of the Niagara Falls Lions’ Club will be held on Friday at 6:30 pm at the Morse funeral home in Niagara Falls.  Funeral service will take place in Lundy’s Lane Church on Saturday at 10:30.  Interment to follow at Fairview Cemetery.

(1932-2010) - It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Gloria Isabel at St. Catharines Place on Monday, August 9, 2010 in her 79th year.

Survived by her loving husband Roger Cattoir and her sister Marilyn Hills (Wayne). Devoted mother to Lee-Ann Brown, Scott Jenckes (Sandy), Shelley Jenckes, Cam Jenckes, and Lisa Jenckes (Len).  Fondly remembered by her grandchildren, Tanya (Josh), Jennifer( Mike), Dustin, Mike, Cody, Brittney, Steven, Ellen and Morgan. Cherished aunt to Cindy (Fred), Tammy (Tim), Tim and their families.

Gloria was born in Sudbury and moved to St. Catharines in her late teens where she raised her family.  Gloria and Roger resided in Buckhorn, Ontario for 25 years before returning to St. Catharines.  Gloria retired from Canada Post where she worked in both St. Catharines and Peterborough.  The family would like to thank the staff at both Shaver Hospital and St. Catharines Place for their support and care. 

A celebration of Gloria’s life will be held on Tuesday, August 24th in St. Catharines.

Brenda Darlleen Dow of Damascus, NB passed away on August 8, 2010, in the Palliative Care Unit at the Saint John Regional Hospital, following a 30-month battle with cancer.

She was born in North Bay, Ontario on October 26, 1945, the daughter of the late Courtney and Mary Tracey (Marino). Brenda is survived by her loving husband of 40 years, Ronald Dow, son Stephen Dow (Rebecca) of Toronto, daughters Nicole Dow of Damascus and Cara-Lee (Casey) Sharpe of Damascus.

Eight grandchildren, Brett Dow (Amanda Muise), Brittany Dow, Alyssa and Kalyn Dow, Chelsea, Kensie, Charis and Jayden Sharpe. Two great grandchildren, Kayden and Koda Muise. Her sister Joyce (Tom) Halbert of Stevensville, ON and brother Courtney (Dorothy) Tracey of Niagara Falls, ON. Many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by grandson Ryan Dow.

Brenda attended school in Chippewa, Niagara Falls, ON then worked as a keypunch operator for Regal Stationary in Toronto, a receptionist and secretary in Saint John and prior to becoming ill, as a seamstress for Valley Home Interiors in Rothesay, NB.  She attended St. James the Less Anglican Church in Rothesay, NB. She was a member of Fun'D Cloggers dance team, Renforth Boat Club, Royal Canadian Legion Branch 58 Rothesay, NB and Darling Divas Red Hat Society, Hampton, NB.

Visitation will be held at St. James the Less Church, Rothesay, NB on Tuesday, August 10th from 2-8 pm. The funeral service will be conducted at St. James the Less Church at 2:00 pm on Wednesday, August 11th. Cremation. Interment will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Palliative Care unit at the Saint John Regional Hospital or the Children's Wish Foundation.

Beloved husband of Shirley. Loving father of Julia, stepfather to Shirley's children, and grandfather of Douglas and Zachary.  Bill is survived by his sisters Phoebe and Dorothy.

Bill has been a member of the Royal Canadian Legion since November 1945.

Arrangements under way in St. Catharines.  In keeping with his wishes, cremation has taken place and a private graveside service will follow at a later date.

Suddenly went to be with her Lord and her beloved Albert (2004), on August 8, 2010 at Woodlands of Sunset in her 89th year.

Survived by her children Cheryl (late Frank) Sawada, Karen Paiva (Joe), Donald (Mary), Brian (Deborah) and Dennis (Marie). Mary was grandmother to ten, great grandmother to 13 and great great grandmother to two. She is also survived by sisters Virginia Sidorchuk, Margery Davies, brothers Jerry and Paul Romano. Predeceased by five sisters and one brother.

Mary was active in Our Lady of Peace Church as a member of the CWL. She was Girl Guide Captain of 13th Niagara and later was District Commissioner of Niagara. She was the supervisor of wait staff at Mt. Carmel Spiritual Centre, which she enjoyed immensely.

After retirement, Mary and Albert travelled north, south, east and west and always marveled at the sights they saw. Mary was fun-loving and loved her immediate and extended family. Fiesty to the end, she was always quick with a comment and never failed to speak her mind. Many thanks to the staff of Woodlands who made Mom comfortable over these last six months.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated in Our Lady of Peace Church, Niagara Falls on Thursday morning.  Cremation to follow.

Peacefully while surrounded by her family, Rosa passed away on Saturday, August 7th, 2010 in her 84th year.

Greatly missed by her children, Angelo (Maria) Josie (Vince) Pennimpede, Joe (Lynda) and Maria (Bill) Pontello. Cherished grandmother of Rosalynn, Vito (Carrie), LeeAnn (Jeff), Tracie, Daniel, Mitchell, Alannah, Noah and Hannah and her new great granddaughter baby Ellie. Sadly missed by many friends and family in Italy and Australia. Predeceased by her husband Gino and baby daughter Lena.

Rosa was born in Poggiomarino, Naples, Italy, immigrated to Australia with her husband Gino and two children in 1952. She lived in Yarram, Australia with her husband and four children before coming to Canada in 1972. She was a loving, gentile and affectionate lady who loved family gatherings. Her family was her pride and joy and she treasured them dearly.

Mass of Christian Burial will be said in St. Michael's Roman Catholic Church, Fort Erie on Wednesday at 11 am. Interment to follow in Greenwood Cemetery.

Jane had been the receptionist at The Davidson Funeral Home, Fort Erie for 30 years, retiring in 2009.

Funeral in Ridgeway on Tuesday, August 10th with Pastor Stan Bursey officiating. Interment at McAffee Cemetery, Fort Erie.

Peacefully on Friday, August 6, 2010 at Douglas Memorial Hospital, Fort Erie.  Joe Arman, 75 years of age.

Beloved husband of Maria for 52 years.  Loving father of Wilma Conte (Mike), Sandra Arman (Glen) and the late Aldo Arman (Dec. 31, 2007). Cherished grandfather of Christopher Corriveau (Shannon), Brittnie Corriveau, Ryan Conte, and Taylor and Mark Arman. Great grandfather of Max Corriveau. Dear brother of Geneta and Katerina of Croatia, brother-in-law of Yolanda Blazevich (Pino) and their son Carmelo.  Fondly remembered by many nieces and nephews in Croatia.

Joe was born and raised in Vizinada, Italy. Later on in life, Joe met his beautiful bride Maria Blazevich. They were married in St. Peter’s Roman Catholic Church in Rome, Italy. In 1960, they immigrated to Thunder Bay, Canada with his expectant wife Maria.

Joe worked for Abitibi as a lumberjack for five years, then went to Grain Elevators as a Millwright, finally retiring to Niagara Falls in 1977.  Joe was famous for his pig roasts, he loved to fish, and he was loved by all who knew him.

Funeral mass will be celebrated from Our Lady of the Scapular Church, 6557 Thorold Stone Rd, Niagara Falls on Wednesday, August 11th at 10 a.m. Entombment will follow in Pleasantview Memorial Gardens Mausoleum, Fonthill.

She was the proud Grandmother of Michael & Ian Durkin, Meaghan, Robbie & Katie Irwin, Lindsay & Ben King (Courtney), and Sean & Colin Dunne and Great Grandmother to Andrew.

Kathleen was Secretary at St. Patrick's Church in Port Colborne for 22 years. She was Secretary/Treasurer of St. Patrick's CWL for many years and was also Secretary/Treasurer of St. Patrick's Council of St. Vincent de Paul Society.

Kathleen was a faithful Volunteer at Northland Manor for many years and enjoyed all the friends she made while volunteering. Kathleen loved to play Bridge and was a member of the Port Colborne Seniors Bridge Club and also Rose City Bridge Club in Welland.

It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Dolores Lowden at St. Catharines General Hospital on Friday, August 6, 2010 with her family by her side, in her 68th year. 

Survived by her mother Stella Nowak, brother Steve Novak, and loving husband Ed Lowden. Devoted mother of Chris (Linda) Maybee, Geoff (Michelle) Maybee and Archie (Michelle) Maybee. Loving step-mother of Randy (Christine) Lowden, Karen Lowden and Leanne (John) Mothershead.

Dolores touched the lives of many with her generosity of spirit and active community involvement with the Grantham Optimist Club, as well as her past employment with the District School Board of Niagara. Passed away peacefully on Friday, August 6, 2010 in Niagara Falls.

Born in Madoc, ON on June 22, 1929, Ralph spent 23 years in Belleville, ON and graduated from D.C.I.V.S. in 1949. In 1954, he married the girl next door, Elsie Walker (July 2009). He was employed by Personal Finance in 1953 which later changed names to Beneficial Finance, and remained with the company for the next 33 years, moving from Belleville, Toronto, New Toronto, Chatham and finally to Niagara Falls in July 1963, where he remained until his retirement in 1986.

He is survived by his nephews Gary Sweetman of Niagara Falls, Stephan Sweetman of Belleville, Ross Cordes of New Brunswick, and niece Connie Murray of Kingston.

Ralph & Elsie were ardent Witnesses of Jehovah for over 40 years and both looked forward to a time where they would be living in a paradise earth as God promised (Psalms 37:29), where there will be no pain, sorrow, or dying (Revelations 21:3-4).

As per Ralph's wishes, cremation to take place with a memorial service to be held at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, 6735 Caledonia Street, Niagara Falls on Friday, August 13th at 7:00 p.m.

Peacefully on Thursday, August 5, 2010 in her room at Sunrise Senior Living Retirement Home in Burlington, On., where she'd been a resident for the past four years. Isabel Kitching, at the age of 88.

Born in Scotland, and was a resident of Niagara Falls for 82 years. A longtime member of the Niagara Falls Curling Club, she also enjoyed summer golf with her friends. Isabel was involved in the Canadian Kennel Club where she trained her Shetland Sheep dogs in obedience competition.  She also had a passion for gardening and restoring antique furniture. During her retirement years, Isabel enjoyed travelling and her many cruises.

Beloved wife of the late W.G. Bev Kitching (Sept. 15, 1991). Loving mother of Scott and his partner Andrea Kershaw- Mauro, Burlington/Muskoka. Dear grandma of Jill and her husband Matt Geary, Jennifer and Lynsey Kitching. Great grandma of James Cameron Geary and sister of Margaret Welstead and the late George Fisher and the late Jean Fisher.

(March 19, 1912 - August 5, 2010) - A golden heart has stopped beating. Hard-working hands at rest. God broke our hearts to prove to us, He only takes the best.

It is with great sorrow that we announce the peaceful passing of our beautiful & cherished Mother & Grandmother, Natalie Konop. She died on August 5, 2010 at Meadows of Dorchester and will now join her husband; John (1973).  Thank you to the Meadows for its wonderful care.

Natalie leaves behind her loving daughter Eugenia (Jeni), much loved son-in-law; Nicholas Buzdygan, grandaughters Sandra (Paul) Damore, Stephne (Brian) Johnson and all the puppies. She is also survived by nieces in Cleveland, Montreal, and the Ukraine, and sisters-in-law in Welland, Ontario.

Born in the Ukraine, Natalie married in Montreal in 1930 and lived the rest of her life in Ridgeway, and then Niagara Falls. Nothing meant more to her than her family, friends and the love for her church. She was an active member of St. Mary's Ukranian Church and a member of the Catholic Woman's League. She was a proud Canadian, while always immensely proud of her Ukranian heritage.

Natalie was also a very clever business woman having raised thousands of turkeys on the family turkey ranch in Ridgeway. She enjoyed cooking, gardening, sewing and could stretch a dollar beyond its means. Many had said it was Natalie who invented recycling long before it became fashionable, for nothing ever went to waste. She was an Angel on earth, and now she's an Angel in Heaven. A very special thank you to Francis Patterson for his very kind assistance.

Funeral Mass to be celebrated on Monday, August 9th at 11:00 am at St. Mary's Ukrainian Church, Niagara Falls. Cremation to follow service.

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of John, in his 57th year, on August 5th, 2010 at the Welland County General Hospital.

John was the beloved son of the late Joseph and Mary Kozela. Much loved brother of Joseph (Yolande) and Paul (Slava). Special uncle to Ron (Michelle), Tom (Jean), Peter, Joe Jr. and Chris, and great uncle to Teddy and Danni.

The family wishes to extend sincere thanks to the Welland and District Association for Community Living and to all the hospital staff for their care and comfort.  John was loved and will be missed by all who knew and cared for him, as well as the staff at Rice Road Nurseries where he worked for many years.

In accordance with his wishes, cremation has taken place.  A memorial service will be held in St. Catharines on Friday, August 13th.

Jim passed away peacefully at Oakwood Park Lodge on Thursday, August 5, 2010, with his family by his side, following an eight year struggle with Alzheimer’s.

A former Managing Editor of the Welland Tribune, Jim was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather.

Survived by Betty, his wife of 56 years; his four children, Barbara (Kelly), Diana (David), Kim (Kevin) and William (Marion); 11 grandchildren; Beth (Jon), Aaron, Eric, Andrea (Jeremy), Michael, Stephanie, Meredith, Leanna, Sara, Catie and Laura; and great grandson Ian.

Alex came to Grimsby in 1954 as Superintendent of Schools in Lincoln County. He enjoyed sports and a good game of golf. He gave many words of encouragement to those he touched. Words for his grandchildren: Keep fit, work hard, play fair and live clean. He will be remembered for his loving gentleness and memory of names and Bible verses. The family wishes to thank all those who participated in his loving care.

(June 29, 1927 - August 3, 2010) - It is with great sadness we announce the sudden passing of our beloved father Roland Goodman.

Ron was predeceased by his wife Rita (1984). He is survived by his brother Roger and Myra Goodman and his four children, Astrid (Michael), Brian, Kim (Marcel) and Roland (Kathy) and his many nieces and nephews. He leaves behind his four grandchildren, Devon, Andrew, Dylan and Ira whom he loved dearly.

Ron emigrated from England in 1949 to Canada where he met his lovely wife Rita and raised their family. He taught Geography at Niagara District High School for 25 years.

Ron never spoke an unkind word, always had a joke of laugh to share and was there to help anyone in need. He was a true gentleman in every sense of the word and always displayed a positive attitude. Anyone who knew him was a better person because of it. His legacy will carry on through his family. He will forever be in our hearts until we meet again.

It is with heavy hearts and great sadness that our family announces the passing of Dr. James W. Kerr on Tuesday, August 3, 2010 at the age of 67.

Jim will be missed by Eleonor, his best friend and wife for 42 years. He was a proud father of his three children, Carolyn (Bob), Fiona (Brad) and Eleonor (Jason) and a proud grandfather of his seven grandchildren.

"Jimmy" Kerr was born in Glasgow, Scotland and Graduated from the University of Glasgow with his M.B., CH.B in 1967. His post graduate work was at the Southern General in Glasgow, followed by the University of Toronto Galley course for Surgical Intern at Toronto Western Hospital.

Jim started a family practice in 1971 in Niagara Falls, with Dr. A. Nestler and later, partner Dr. Dan Dargavel. He served the Greater Niagara General Hospital Department of Family Practice from 1971. He served as Chair of the Advisory Committee at GNGH and was head of Family Practice-Niagara Health System from 2000 to 2008.

Dr. Kerr had a wing at Nimigon Retirement Home (The Kerr Wing) dedicated to him in 2001 for his service as Physician in Residence. He served as physician for the Ontario Jockey Club and volunteered with Heart Niagara and the Niagara Falls Badminton and Tennis Club where he also served on the board of Directors.

Among his other services to the community, he volunteered on the Niagara Marathon Medical Services team for the 1980 and 1984 US Olympic Trials and the 1985 Toronto World Games. He was a member of Niagara Golf and Country Club, a racehorse owner and an avid horseracing fan. 

Jim will be missed by his many friends, his patients and his colleagues.

He cherished the friendships he had in his family. Alex was a member of the Church of the Good Shepherd, The Irish Club and the Dunlop Senior's Group.

Jack worked at Oneida for 43 years and retired as a supervisor. Jack was an avid golfer and enjoyed bowling.  He was also an active member of the seniors' slow pitch league in Niagara Falls.  Jack will be remembered by his family, cousins and friends as a hard worker and loving person who truly cared about his family and others.

In keeping with Jack's wishes, cremation has taken place.

After a short, but courageous battle with cancer, surrounded by loved ones she went to be with the Lord on Monday, August 2, 2010.

Special thanks to Dr Masood and the nursing staff at GNGH for their guidance and supportive care to all of us and to Pastor Peter Greyling for his spiritual support. Bev never felt abandoned or alone during this ordeal and was grateful for all the prayers, love and care sent her way.

Over the years, Bev touched many lives through her leadership on the Board of Niagara Support Services, Queenston Community Association, Niagara Regional Police Services and her many years as a kindergarten teacher with the DSBN.

Passed away peacefully in his 53rd year at home with his family by his side on August 2nd, 2010.

Survived by his loving wife Rae Ann of 30 yrs. Beloved father to Jim, Jonathan and Jessica. Chris is predeceased by his parents Jack and Jo-Anne and his brother Michael.

Chris worked as a teacher for the District School Board of Niagara since 1984. Chris loved all sports.  Whether he was a player on the field or coach on the sidelines, he always focused on how the game was played and not the final score. In the game of life he was also a great player and coach.

Chris will be truly missed by his family, friends, coworkers and the thousands of students he taught at several different local high schools.

Donations to the Walker Cancer Centre would be appreciated by the family.

Passed away peacefully at the age of 78 with his loving family by his side on Monday, August 2nd, 2010 at the St. Catharines General Hospital.

Brian lived life to the fullest since immigrating to Canada in 1960. He often enjoyed a round of golf with friends, watching a match with his mates at the Celtic Club, and was a longtime member of The Scottish Club of St. Catharines. Brian will be truly missed by Margaret (nee Shaw), his wife of 53 years and his daughter Marie (Dave) Bowman.

Loving brother in law of Sadie (John) McWhirter, Isaac (Ann) Shaw and David Shaw. Cherished uncle of Elaine (John) and their children Katharine and Madelene. Special friend of Mary Murray. Beloved brother of Maureen and Gretta of Scotland.

Suddenly at his home in Port Colborne on Monday, August 2, 2010 in his 80th year.

Beloved husband of Sandra Flonders. Loving father of Perianne (Brian) Henderson and Wayne Flonders and stepfather of Joanne (John) Horvat, Linda (Branko) Horvat and Susan (Sean) Merritt. Papa will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by his grandchildren Tommy, Patrick, Robert, Steven, Stephanie, Jennifer, Cally, Brad, Dillon and Devinne.

Dear brother of James, Marie and Emily. Predeceased by parents William and Helen, brother Alexander and sisters Albina and Patricia.

Ernest worked at General Motors for many years and won a number of awards for improvement suggestions, including the Kettering Award in 1984. He was involved in minor league hockey for many years, was a talented fiddle/guitar player and loved the north.

There will be a Memorial Service to celebrate Ernest’s life in Thorold on Friday, August 6th. Cremation has taken place.

It is with great sadness that the family of Horst Kaupert announces his passing at McNally House, Grimsby on Monday, August 2, 2010.  He left peacefully surrounded by his family after a brief battle with cancer in his 85th year.

Beloved husband and best friend for 59 years to Lois (nee McDonald). Left behind with many cherished memories are his children; Shelley Oliveira (Dominic), Gary (Jennifer), Doug (Leslie) and Dan (Darlene), eight grandchildren and one great-grand daughter.

Dear brother of Anne MacFarlane. He will also be sadly missed by many nieces, nephews, family and friends.

Horst retired from Stelco in 1988 and enjoyed many years of traveling, skiing, fishing and golf. Special thanks to Dr. Elizabeth Shoemaker and the amazing staff and volunteers at McNally House for their outstanding care and compassion.

Cremation has taken place.  A Service of Remembrance will be held at St. John’s Presbyterian Church, 10 Mountain Street, Grimsby, on Friday, August 6th at 11 am.

BOWSER, Ernest Raymond (WWII Veteran) –

Of Welland, at the Welland Hospital on Sunday, August 1, 2010 in his 91st year.

Beloved husband of the late Frances Lydia Bowser (nee Smith). Loving father of Patricia Zuba of Welland and Joyce Muise of Yarmouth, NS. Dear brother of Elizabeth Taphouse and Helen Moreash, both of Halifax, NS. Lovingly remembered by a number of nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews and great great nieces and nephews.

Predeceased by his parents John and Florence Bowser, son James Doucette and brothers Joseph, William, John, James and Leonard.

Mr. Bowser worked as a baker at Christies Bakery for 25 years, retiring in the early 1970’s. He served his country overseas in WWII with the Canadian Army.

The funeral service will be conducted in Welland on Friday, August 6th. Rite of Committal in Holy Cross Cemetery will follow.

It is with deep and heartfelt sadness that the family of “Miss Val” of Port Colborne announces her passing on Sunday, August 1, 2010 at the Welland County General Hospital in her 84th year.

Beloved wife of the late Theodore Cook. Predeceased by her parents Corinne and Robert Arnott Wilson, her brother Robert Arnott Wilson and her step brother Marvin Richardson. She will be truly missed by Darlene and Ron Harpwood who considered her a second Mom, Amber and Aron Burch and Tanner Harpwood and Mandy Walters.

She was the “Great Aunt Val” of Hunter Burch and Hayley Harpwood. She will be lovingly remembered by Norma and Gordie Sage of Vermont and Barb and Murray Miner of Port Colborne and the Jaroslawski and Broderick Families.

“Miss Val” shared her love and gift of dance with thousands of students over the past 35 years at the Valeria L. Wilson School of Dance in Port Colborne and Welland. “Miss Val” choreographed many musical productions for Welland Little Theatre and Centennial Secondary School. “Miss Val” will be ‘dancingly’ missed by students, parents and friends from Miss Dar’s School of Dance.

A private graveside service will be held at Fonthill Cemetery at a later time.

Memorial remembrances to the Breast Cancer Research Fund would be appreciated.
